The St. Clare Track Team was established in 1977 and has continuously been a program available to all children of the parish in grades one through eight. The program prides itself on the fact that no child is ever left out of a competition. All children compete, regardless of skill or aptitude.
St. Clare has one of the most successful cross-country/track and field programs on Staten Island. The program has a reputation as being a leader and producing winning teams year after year.
The program is divided into three seasons – Cross Country Season – August through November; Indoor Season – November through February; and Outdoor Season – March through June.
Cross County Season
Cross Country Season is composed of four track meets, all contested at Clove Lakes Park, Staten Island. The first and second grade athletes compete in a one-quarter mile race. The third and fourth grade athletes compete in a one-half mile race. The fifth and sixth grade athletes and the seventh and eighth grade girls compete in a one-mile race. The seventh and eighth grade boys compete in a one and one-half mile race. The first through fourth grade athletes compete in full view of all spectators. The course for the fifth through eighth grade athletes takes the runners through a portion of the wooded area at Clove Lakes Park. All races are monitored by security personnel. The season culminates with the Joseph Maceda Memorial Championship Meet, with team winners, as well as individual winners.
St. Clare is the only parish on Staten Island which has an Indoor Season Track Team. This season is available to girls only--- the competition being the Colgate Women’s Games. The events contested are: Races: 100m, 200m, 400m, 1600m, 100m hurdles. Field Events: High Jump and Shot Put. The trials to the actual Colgate Women’s Games are contested at Pratt Institute in Brooklyn every Saturday or Sunday (first through fifth grades on Saturday; sixth through eighth on Sunday) in January, followed by the semi-finals open to those athletes who qualified. The culmination of the season is the Colgate Women’s Games at Madison Square Garden in February.
The Outdoor Season is probably the most popular. The team has been known to have upwards of 140 athletes for this season. This season is comprised of the following track meets held on Staten Island: Crusader Relay Carnival; Our Lady of Good Counsel Mad Dash; Luke Parlatore Memorial Meet; Blessed Sacrament Titan League Meet, and the CYO/STAFF Championship Meets (open to those outstanding athletes selected to compete). Additionally, the Archdiocese of New York sponsors a qualifying track meet with the winners being invited to compete at a national track meet in Orlando, Florida. For the past few years a number of athletes from the St. Clare Track Team competed successfully at this meet in Florida.
Events contested at outdoor meets: Races: 100m, 200m, 400m, 800m and 1600m. Relay races: 4 x 100 and SMR (Sprint Medley Relay). Field events: Shot Put, Long Jump and Standing Broad Jump.
