Parish Manager

As the Parish Manager Mrs. Bulger is responsible for conducting the business affairs of the parish in an ethical, professional, efficient and organized manner. This is done in order to relieve the pastor of as much of the administrative details of the Parish as is possible.

The Parish Manager at St. Clare's has many duties which vary from day to day. However, the oversight of the Parish Schedule and the Maintenance of our enormous plant here at St. Clare's with all its buildings and grounds are an ongoing daunting task. In addition, she is responsible for the personnel records and payroll for the entire Parish Staff including our school, in addition to being accountable for the overall direct supervision of the secretarial, clerical and maintenance staff on a daily basis.

Mrs. Bulger came to St. Clare parish in early 1960, and began her ministry as a parish secretary in 1974.

In 1985 Rev. Joseph Murphy was assigned as Pastor of St. Clare's Parish and in 1989 I volunteered to be the Supervisor for Parish properties for St. Clare's.

In October 1957 in preparation for the start of the construction of the new St. Clare's Church and School Addition, the original Colonial Type Church had to be relocated. Monsignor Flannagan, the current Pastor, was able to obtain additional property located to the south of the present campus, adjacent to the Church property.

Monsignor Flannagan asked me to organize a volunteer group of carpenters, laborers and bricklayers and direct them to form a stepped footing for concrete and build an eight inch concrete block foundation for the relocated chapel building. The volunteer crew worked on Saturdays and Sundays and completed the foundation for the church.
The Church was moved by a professional mover and it was ready in the Spring of 1958 for the contractor to grade-off with the excavated dirt from the Church/school to level off around the relocated chapel and form a parking lot area. Bob Fleming in 1992 made a VCS, tape of St. Clare's Memories which included pictures and the history of all the buildings of the parish, up to that time.

Bob Fleming's first project as Supervisor for Parish Properties was in 1990 when Monsignor Murphy approved the construction of the Father Hicks Center. Bob Fleming worked with the Architect on the design of the center and acted as the owners rep during the construction. The center was completed and dedicated on Sept. 1992. The first floor in the Cardinal Cooke Center was completely gutted and rebuilt for a state of the art "Pre-School Area. This project was completed in 1999.

The next project received the approval of Msgr Murphy was the "Pathway of Prayer". This "Off the Street Loop" was designed to park cars for funerals and weddings off the busy Nelson Ave and avoided a dangerous condition. It was a two-fold project with the sidewalk area used for inscribed bricks for parishioners to dedicate for their loved ones. In 2002 work was performed to restructure the foundation of the Chapel. In 2004, with the help of grants, work was completed and the chapel basement was dedicated "Adult Faith Formation center" in Sept 2004. In the past two decades many major changes has been made to the buildings of St Clare's Campus. The work is too many to list and there are plans, for the future, for many more improvements, like additional parking, more sidewalk area for inscribed bricks for the "Pathway of Prayer" and many more.

Youth Minister

John grew up and still resides in Brooklyn, New York. He graduated from St. Ephrem Grammar School, Xaverian High School, and St. Francis College.

Even though Youth Ministry was non-existent in John's home parish, John was involved with parish life and was invited to join the Diocesan Youth Ministry Advisory Board in 1994. Through his involvement with the diocese, John attended classes and, in 1999, earned a Certificate of Youth Ministry. This certificate, along with his college studies, allowed him to become the first Youth Minister hired at his home parish of St. Ephrem, in Brooklyn.

John received a full scholarship to St. Francis College, which allowed him to earn his B.S. Business Management degree in 2001. He chose to continue his work in Youth Ministry and in 2001 earned the position of Assistant Director of Youth Ministry for the Diocese of Brooklyn.

But, parish ministry is where he was called to, so John accepted a position as Youth Minister for St. Patrick Parish in Chatham, New Jersey in 2002. There he coordinated all Youth Ministry and Confirmation preparation for almost 300 teenagers.

But, Chatham was too far for this Brooklyn boy. So, in 2004, John joined the Saint Clare Parish Staff and serves as the Youth Minister. He coordinates all youth ministry for the junior high, high school and hopes to expand the ministry with the college-age students too.

In addition to his ministry at Saint Clare’s, John is currently pursuing his M.S. Ed Guidance Counseling at Brooklyn College full-time. He serves on several Youth Ministry Consultation Committees through the National Federation of Youth Ministry in Washington, DC, and is a member of the Board of Directors of the Brooklyn Diocesan Newspaper The Tablet.
