Hearing Our Heroes Needs Your Votes!
Requested by Sean Egan,
Rectory clerk and student at Msgr. Farrell High School
Hearing our Heroes is a group established by students at Msgr. Farrell High School to assist veterans and remind others how much our brave veterans sacrificed to protect liberty. They have applied for a grant from State Farm Insurance for $25.00 to address an unmet need in the community. They need votes to win, and you can help by LIKING them on Facebook. Click here to vote. Don't forget to share with your friends too!
Here's some quick information about their group:
Last year, we received $20,000 in material and monetary donations. This money was used to provide thousands of "care packages" to homeless veterans and veterans at local VA Hospitals, host a BBQ that hosted hundreds of veterans to celebrate their service, run a snow shoveling program serving 50 veterans, provide aid to local veterans in the wake of Hurricane Sandy, and run trips that allow our members to meet veterans at VA Centers such as Walter Reed VA Center. The $25,000 grant would in part be used to help continue these activities. The bulk of the money would be used towards our EXPANSION to schools throughout the COUNTRY. Whether it was in Texas, where we were invited by and spent time with President Bush, or from veterans in our community, we have been told that we should try to start HOH chapters in other schools. This money would allow us to start up programs throughout the country, by giving other chapters part of the grant money to run programs similar to ours.

Stand Together for Autism
Requested by: Joanne Nuzzo,
Director of Special Events
On Sunday, October 16th, Borough President James P. Molinaro will be holding his second annual “Stand Together for Autism Services on Staten Island” event at the Michael J. Petrides School, 715 Ocean Terrace in the school auditorium, beginning at 1:00 p.m. The goal is to fill the auditorium with Staten Island families, friends and caregivers of those living with autism to join us as we hold a Community Information Open House and call on government to do more to help the autism community.
Staten Island has one of the highest rates of autism in New York State. In that vein, Borough President Molinaro continues to hold this event to let Staten Island’s autism community know that they do not stand alone in their fight for services they need and deserve.
