Next Blood Drive Tuesday, December 3, 2013 4:00 - 9:30 PM St. Clare School Gym 151 Lindenwood Road, Staten Island, NY 10308 - additional parking at 110 Nelson Avenue Some helpful notes for this year....- We will be having it on the first TUESDAY in Dec. instead of the customary Thursday.
- We are incorporating a new component into the blood drives here. We will be asking qualified blood donors to consider being registered in the International Bone Marrow Registry. You may be able to save a life for someone needing a Bone Marrow/Stem Cell transplant. The process is voluntary, simple and painless. It only requires a cheek swab to be tested and registered.
- All participants will be entered into a drawing to win a pair of tickets to Super Bowl XLVIII!!! Click here to learn more.
- St. Clare's Little Docs are working hard to secure donors. Click here for the registration sheet.
Two good examples of why it is important to give blood; from our own St. Clare family....Kim Buscini, a parishioner and mother of two children in our St. Clare School, is trying to find a stem cell donor for her mom, Mary Varela who is also a St. Clare parishioner. Mary was diagnosed with leukemia and doctors say that she needs a life saving stem cell transplant very soon. We’re praying and hoping a donor can be found. Unfortunately she has no relatives who are a match for her. Mary, and many others like her, will literally be depending on the generosity of strangers willing to be donors for their survival.
- Maureen Miller is a teacher at St. Clare’s School and mother of 3 children and is a survivor. On March 25, 2006 the Oncologists at Staten Island University Hospital told her that she had Level 4 of Multiple Myeloma, more commonly known as bone marrow cancer, an often-fatal blood disease. After receiving all possible treatments available at Sloane Kettering Hospital, it was decided that her only option was a stem cell transplant. She is living testimony to the good people who donate blood. She needed numerous blood transfusions as she battled her disease. She was one of the fortunate ones that found a stem cell donor in her own family, her brother. Most people that need these transplants cannot find a viable donor in their family. Maureen said, “although it took a ton of prayers and moral support from family and friends - It would not have been possible without the people donating to blood drives. (Especially my brother)”

“Twice a year St. Clare’s has a blood drive!!! Most parishioners hear about the drive at Sunday Mass or read about it in the parish bulletin. They probably think about donating blood at that particular moment but eventually their thoughts are soon forgotten or put off till later or another year. Maybe next year??”
Don’t put it off! Please consider being a blood donor and even possibly getting a cheek swab to be registered on the Bone Marrow/Stem Cell Registry – LIVES ARE DEPENDING ON YOU.
